GATES HISTORICAL SOCIETY LOCAL HISTORY FILES (updated 5-28-25)
In November 2023, Gates Public Library transferred their four cabinets of local history clippings to the Gates Historical Society. The files are stored in the Society’s Hinchey Homestead archives and are constantly updated. For a list of file contents, see the attached PDF. https://gateshistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/local-history-files-4-2025.pdf
Files were started by the library in 1970 so they have little information prior to 1970; the bulk of information is focused on the Town of Gates and the immediate area. Society volunteers will honor requests for information in the files by email or telephone; contact: gateshistoricalsociety@gmail.com or call [585] 464-9740. There may be a charge for photocopying or scanning, subject to copyright laws.
Gates Businesses and Services, circa 1976-77
Over the pandemic, the Society fielded a number of questions about older Gates businesses, so when we found this list produced by Gates Public Library decades ago which was culled from the Polk 1976-77 Suburban Directory. We checked copyright restrictions and found none, so we thought scanning this 23 page document would help our website visitors appreciate the changes in the Town of Gates. All this data is historic and this is not current information, so please do not call any of these phone numbers! Just a historic look back on businesses in Gates from 40 years ago for your trip down Memory Lane.
