Mission Statement
The Gates Historical Society leads in providing information on Gates history and in preserving and showcasing the Hinchey Homestead as a model historic site. This is achieved by programs, events, exhibits, tours and related services to Society members and the general public.
Gates Historical Society
On November 30, 1998, a meeting was called by Susan Swanton, Gates Public Library Director, and Christine Kimmerly, President of the Gates Garden Club to determine if there was interest in forming a Gates Historical Society for the purpose of acquiring the Hinchey Homestead then up for sale. Over 30 people attended and the motion to form the Gates Historical Society was proposed by Jack Hart, Town Historian. In December 1999, fund-raising efforts began with the goal of purchasing the homestead. The Hinchey family was prominent in Gates History. The homestead, which was built in the 1870s, had never been updated.
